From the outside, the ocean seems like this dark, mysterious realm, which is slightly scary but can be used ad infinitum as one sees fit – it is virtually endless and belongs to everyone, after all, (which paradoxically leads to nobody cares).

Thus we pollute and poison the ocean, overheat and overfish it, exploit it and ignorantly interfere with its ecosystems.

In other words, we treat the ocean as bad as we have been treating the whole earth for a long time. The difference is that we cannot easily see the consequences, because they disappear beneath the water-surface or are difficult to comprehend due to the complex marine system. That makes it easy to forget about what we do.
